The Spirit Within Saint Junipero approaches Saint Junípero from a unique perspective, the sense of place, by presenting close and detailed views of the places that formed Junípero Serra, the places where he worked as a professor, a priest, and a missionary, and the places whose foundation was animated by his vision. By reflecting upon these places, the reader will be in able to approach this man in a fresh way. Craig Alan Huber first began photographing the California Missions in 2008, and as he learned more of the Franciscans and contributions of Fray Serra in particular, he decided to make sojourns to both Mallorca and Mexico as well, to photograph the important places Serra played a pivotal role in. During his dedicated pilgrimages to these spiritual sites, he sought and often felt a life force flowing through them. This unseen energy has a Spirit. It is this Spirit Within he reveals through his work. The images presented in this book are from Mr. Huber's pilgrimages to thirty-seven sites where Serra had an impact. Twenty-three sites are in Alta California, where Junípero directly founded the first nine Missions and set the stage for the remainder. Seven locations are in Mexico, where he established five Missions in the remote Sierra Gorda mountains, and played significant roles in two Franciscan colegios San Fernando in Mexico City, and Santa Cruz in Queretaro. Finally, there are seven locations on the island of Mallorca where Josep Miguel Serra was born and eventually became a Franciscan just shy of his eighteenth birthday. For the entire book, photographer Craig Alan Huber was faithful to what some term today as 'old school' photography, working with a large format film view camera, the same style used by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and other iconic photographers. Seven years since its inception, he is ready to present this work in comprehensive form.. A Labor of Love: This Book Could Count as One of Serra's Miracles! - 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.A Labor of Love: This Book Could Count as One of Serra's Miracles! By Peter Spangenberg The care that went into the design and production of this beautiful book is immediately evident upon opening the cover. Starting with the embossed end-papers, every detail, including the choice of heavy paper, the type font, the colors selected for page breaks and type, and the 101 superbly reproduced photographs betray this as a book to be treasured by its owners and coveted by its viewers. Three short historical essays by Robert Senkewicz precede the photographs that represent the three phases of Serra's journey as a Franciscan priest and missionary. Just enough information is provided to give the viewer a good sense of context before you visually dive into the photographs to explore the locations. Craig Alan Huber's images are lovely in their subtlety of composition and tonality, and provide an excellent representation both of the missions, and the delights of well crafted platinum photographs. I purchased a platinum print of the cover image from Craig, and the faithfulness of the book's image to the original is remarkable. This is a book to enjoy in a well lit reading chair.
Exceeded my expactations - 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Exceeded my expactations By Vit Exceptional quality of images and print. I got this book since I had been familiar with Craig Huber's work before. I expected a usual photographic book as the many books I own. But this one impressed me the moment I opened it. It is a book printed on thick fine art paper. Each page is a fine art print. The image quality is incredible. You just fall into image. I was catching myself touching the image checking that it is two dimensional and not a three dimensional portal into another reality.
An Intriguing Photographic Journey Through The Life Of Saint Junipero - 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Intriguing Photographic Journey Through The Life Of Saint Junipero By Alex Brikoff This is a beautifully created book that explores the life of Saint Junipero through the captivating and award winning photography of Craig Alan Huber. This book was released just in time to commemorate Saint Junipero's canonization in 2015. What better way to celebrate this monumental event than to visit each of three locations that defined Saint Junipero's life? From Mallorca to Mexico and finally to Alta California, Craig Alan Huber guides the reader on this journey through superbly crafted photographs that were obviously done as a labor of love as well as the result of a tremendous amount of research. The accompanying historical text and essays combine well with the spectacular photography to give the reader a very thorough understanding of the life and times of Saint Junipero. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to further their understanding and appreciation of the man known as Saint Junipero.
